Cricket 1st XI v Wellington College 3rd XI

A great Saturday out for our boy’s 1st XI cricket team with a game that went down to the wire! Starting off the day right by winning the toss, the PC boys elected to bat and started well being 80/2 off 20 overs. A few quick wickets put our boys on the back foot and Wellington’s tight bowling restricted us to 205 all out in the end.  Notable mentions to Reece Gilden (46), Hamish Cowie (28) and Kallum O’Hagen 25 not out, who with Mathew Waterhouse got us over the 200 mark with a valuable 10th wicket partnership of 39.
After what was a respectable batting performance our boys went out to field with their heads held high and ready for what was looking like a great contest. An early wicket thanks to Kallum O’Hagen got the boys excited but Wellington came back strongly and strung a few nice partnerships together to bring them to 119/2. This is when our boys took it upon themselves to lift and strike back. A few quick wickets thanks to Mathew Waterhouse and Ben Spiller after drinks really made the game interesting and got the crowd onto the edge of their seats. Wellington were now 162-6 and required just under 5 runs an over to secure their 3rd successive win of the season. James Birrell got the major wicket of inform batsmen M McCallum (65) and from there the floodgates opened for strike bowler Jack Oldroyd to come in and clean up the tail. Bowling tight lines and great lengths Jack struck twice when we needed him most and the boys finished the game with a runout from Brayden Whitton winning by a mere 10 runs.
Overall an outstanding performance knocking off the top of the table team and honourable bowling mentions to Mathew Waterhouse, James Birrell and Jack Oldroyd for picking up 2 wickets each.
Proud of our lads today!
Up the Gulls!   Reece Gilden (Captain)
